I Am Burned Out

SIGNS YOU'RE SUFFERING FROM COLLEGE BURNOUT

* Your favorite phrase is "I don't give a s@#$."

* When you start showering after class rather than before.

* The test papers are no longer worthy of the fridge door.

* When the campus drunk tells you that you should study more.

* You have spent more time figuring out that you only need a 54% on the final to pass than the time you have actually spent studying.

* When your study schedule is based on the rationale that you "might" actually die before the test!

* Visions of the upcoming weekend help you make it through Monday.

I can honestly say I have said and done most of these things. I am really starting to hate school! I have not started the advance Science program yet and my grades are already slipping. To make matters worse I have sat in at a couple of the advance science program classes/meetings and all I can say is YIKES! Talk about dedication these kids (I swear there is a guy who is only 16) live, breath and eat Science. I’ve always considered myself a Science nerd but I am really intimidated.

At this rate I doubt I will even be qualified for the program next semester. I need to get at least a B in my BioChem class to qualify for this program but right now my average is somewhere around a C+. I take some comfort knowing that the class is brutal, it started out with about 100 students and now there are only around 30 left! Who cares if I do not know all the intricate details of the electron transport chain or all ten Glycolysis Catabolic Pathways as long as I get the big picture right? I am really close to saying screw it all so I took a break today from all my classes. Hopefully things will get better within the next couple of weeks. How is everyone else doing?

ohmygod, pixie. you are way too hard on yourself! supposedly everything starts kicking into gear after the first semester. i don't know that for sure, but i heard about it from the smart kids!

Hi PK glad you stopped by! My first semester was the easiest.

well, no wonder you're all burnt out. you already made it through the roughest part! hang in there. you'll be fine.

It's a bitch, but they make it that way to get rid of those without the willpower to finish. It's like a marathon, it better to finish with a higher time, then to drop-out.

Don't worry about the 16 year old nerd that knows everything. Keep the bigger picture in mind.

Poor Pix! Just take a deep breath and hang with it. It won't last forever. (Tho it may feel like it.)

Pix - All my doctor friends STILL complain about biochem. It is universally revered as the hardest undergrad class for physicians, etc. Don't beat yourself up over it, keep your eye on the prize at the end, and do the best you can.

I had a feeling you might be burned out. I think you mentioned it and then the dearth of blog posts. I wish I had a quick answer for the school blues, but I don't. But you're a trooper Pix, you'll just have to grind through the rest of the semester and keep your aim on summer break. But it is good to take breaks from your classes/studying and just try and schedule/ration your study time. Once you've pushed through it will get easier and you'll realize that you're smarter than you imagined. Seriously, once you get through this semester the summer will re-energize you'll be itching for schoolwork in the fall.

PS - On the bright side, glad to see you posting again, lol. Seriously Pix, cheer up "you can do it!" - Rob Schneider from WATERBOY.

Hang in there! And congrats on being one of the 30 left standing.

p.s. you already have my admiration and respect - I started out a bio major, but ended up with a degree in psychology and going to law school - - I just couldn't cut it in the sciences.

GetFlix I think you are right it does feel like I am in a marathon.

Pru thanks it does feel like forever.

LA BioChem is by far the hardest class I have taken and I already took Calculus and Physics!

V I am keeping the summer break in mind, although I did want to take a few classes for summer I doubt I will now.

Diane I admire you, you have a Psychology degree and went on to Law school that is amazing. I was thinking about going to
Medical School but at this rate it feels like I will never graduate.

YIKES - I just had a horrific flashback! Thanks Pix....NOT!

You will survive.
This too will pass.
Pass the oxygen....

Big hugs and you WILL make it. One day at a time sweet-pea.
